Chapter 2 | Part 2
Saturday, September 15, 1984

Several people recognize Tan as we push our way through. Someone grabs him as I push my way through to Liz. "Hey Liz," I say, "Buy me a drink?"

"Old!" she hollers at the bartender, a tall, thin man with a short beard and glasses. He looks like a college professor, not a hog farmer. She holds up two fingers and yells, "Tequila!"

"Tequila!" shouts a group of young men on the other end of the bar.

Liz grins. "How goes it, mi amiga? To what are we drinking?"

Old leans over the bar to set down the shot glasses, some lemon wedges and holds up the bottle. "Is this her?" he asks.

"Old, Jill Price," says Liz.

He extends his hand and I reach across to shake it.

"Nice to meet you, Jill," he says. "And so?"

"I signed the offer," I say to Liz. "I'm in."

She hugs me and then holds up her shot glass. I hold up mine. We slam them back and suck lemon.

No sooner have we set them down than Old fills them again. "Congratulations!" he yells. Then he grins and moves away, holding the bottle aloft.

She pulls me close and says in my ear, "When do you start?"

"October first," I say in her ear, and then add, "I have a flight to Salt Lake at seven, so I'd better get going. See you in a couple weeks."

"Great," she says. "You want Old to call a cab?"

"Saw three parked up the street." Wave at her and then at Old, who waves back, along with all the young guys on the other side of the bar.

On the way back out, I see Tan, sitting on a chair against the wall. A slinky blonde sits on his lap, sucking his tonsils and grinding her pelvis into his. That makes me grin. Outside, I take a deep breath, looking at the lights in the cool air.

"Hey lady, lookin' for a cab?" calls a driver, waving at me. Sit in back and relax, closing my eyes. Why am I so relieved and happy? Oh yeah, I feel as though I've ducked into the underbrush again because I have a job, which makes me look normal. I'm no longer exposed, at least for another eighteen months.

Chapter 2 | Part 2
Spring 2008

Mic :
In the left frame, I'm posting Doc's Place, one of my copyrighted stories. I'll post a part of a chapter, wait for a while so people may leave comments or questions and then post those I find interesting.

Lucia :
Something I don't understand here. You meet Tan, the two of you hit it off, and then you see that blonde sucking on his tonsils and you grin. It's almost as if you're relieved. How come you're not pissed about Tan and the blonde?

Jules :
Bet I can answer that. Tan is like money in the bank you can spend any time but you just don't have time now. Seeing him with the blonde makes it easy to postpone until you feel like doin' him.

Jill :
Pretty much.

Lucia :
But it just doesn't make sense. He seemed smitten with you and then he's pelvis-grinding with this slut. Doesn't say much for what he thinks of you.

Jill :
Au contraire, mon petit chou. He wants me badly but I don't have time for him right now. Seeing Tan with the blonde takes that pressure off while I slip away.

Ian :

You imply having a job means you're no longer exposed. What's that about?

Jill :
Lucia? Any other questions on Tan?

Lucia :
He sounds young, strong and gorgeous plus he's just panting to get at you. Why don't you put off everything just to be with him?

Jill :
Probably not helpful advice for you but frankly, I like to space out my men with women. In Salt Lake, I had Bruno with his insistent and constant horniness so I didn't want that kind of affection from another lover at that moment. I wanted a woman I could coax and tease so I could open her up. I'll introduce you to Lucy over on this side in a moment and you'll see what I mean.

Lucia :
You're right. That's not helpful.

Jill :
How old are you, Lucia, 22?

Lucia :
20

Jill :

Go out this month and collect 7 lovers that you keep on hand for a month or so. Tell them all the truth—they're 1/7th of your love life. It's not an audition; it's variety. Lovers come and go, so keep the list around 7. Within a couple months, you'll find yourself putting them on the shelf like I did Tan.

Lucia :

What if you find that one—like Tan?

Jill :
That one what?

Lucia :
Mr. Right.

Jill :
No such thing. There's only who you had last, who you have now and who's next.

Lucia :
What about Bruno?

Jill :
Doesn't change the rule: he's last, now or next.

Lucia :
Probably breaks his heart.

Jill :
Used to when we were younger and I was his only squeeze but now he has 30 or so women doing him and new ones walking in the door every week.

Jules :
No wonder he hasn't died; ol' bastard thinks he's already in heaven.

Lucia :
Doesn't that drive you crazy?

Jill :
No, I sit around with those girls and exchange notes on him. Cracks him up.

Jules :
That's it. I'm moving to Nevada. Today.

Jill :
Ian, if I'm not working at a job, I don't fit in and people notice. On the other hand, if I'm working, I don't worry. People just ignore me.

Ian :
Why do you want them to ignore you?

Jill :
So they don't see what I'm doing.

Ian :
Which is?

Jill :
Acquiring wealth, influence and power. Taking over. You haven't forgotten that, have you?

Ian :
No. It's just that what most of us are doing is getting by.

Jill :
I know. By the way Lucia, you and Ian approach sex and work identically.

Lucia :
Why?

Jill :
I don't know why and I don't care either.

Lucia :
No, I meant what do you mean by that?

Jill :
Maria, you answer.

Maria :
Both you and Ian have a concept in your heads of the perfect man and the perfect job. Neither exists. Discover perfection in small moments along the way.

Lucia :
I don't understand that.

Ian :
Neither do I.

Maria :
You're breaking my heart, Jill. Right then, asking me to help Ian and my own daughter, I could kiss you.

Suze :
Jill's pulling you in, Maria. It'll all be clear soon.

Les :
Men are purer. You had us with the killin'.

Maria :
See, that scares me.

Suze :
It won't scare you once you know how it fits. It still disgusts me though.
